GPU the new DSP?

ars technica has informed us that NVIDIA released a compiler to offload math function to GPU.

This is an interesting concept that should allow unique new DSP-like implementations using commodity hardware. Granted I haven’t studied the specifics, yet, however it seems that Voice and Video Codec implementations could benefit from the complex math operations that GPUs can deal with.

At the very least, opening access to the GPUs should lead to better sounding audio on soft-phone clients and perhaps more efficient Vocoder options due to the general availability of video cards having supported GPUs.
