Interop Labs VoIP: Wireless and Security Las Vegas 2007
I am proud to be a part of the VoIP Wireless and Security Team for the 2007 Interop Show in Las Vegas. I am currently in Belmont, CA setting up for the the Hot Stage event, which is the actual testing with all of the vendors and volunteers.
This year we are going to be testing QoS, Scalability, SRTP, Attack Detection and Mitigation (IDS/IPS) and SPIT (VoIP Spam)
Wireless QoS
This year we will be expanding the work from last year to demonstrate the 802.11e QoS mechanism by adding additional handset and AP vendors.
Wireless Scalability
We will be investigating the behavior of wireless infrastructure systems as the number of simultaneous calls increases. We’ll be paying particular attention as things begin to degrade to see if we can determine the “why” of the situation, as well as try to see if there are any tweaks in the network that could improve things.
Media Security - Secure RTP
A VoIP phone call consists of a huge number of small RTP packets carrying audio samples flowing across the network. Who’s listening? The Bad Guys? Government? Or perhaps just a bored network admin! Securing the audio streams through the use of the Secure Real Time Protocol (SRTP) ensures a much higher degree of privacy. We will examine the questions, are there VoIP handsets that support this functionality and are they inter-operable across vendors?
Attack Detection and Mitigation (IDS/IPS)
We will examine the current state of the art in IDS/IPS systems and determine how SIP aware they are. Additionally, we will try to determine how “real” the threat of SIP-based attacks are. Are they just in the lab or have they been seen in the wild?
VoIP Spam - SPIT
According to many bloggers, VoIP Spam (or SPIT) is the next big problem that VoIP users will be forced to deal with. We will examine their claims and determine if there are any vendors with specific products to combat SPIT or if vendors are a solution looking for a problem.
I will provide updates as we progress through our week of Interop testing here in Belmont, CA. Stay tuned!
