Does Your Linksys SPA-942 Back Light Blink, When Running Asterisk 1.4?

Since the Asterisk Development Team strongly encourages everyone to migrate to Asterisk 1.4, I decided it was time I moved to Asterisk 1.4 at both my home and work.

I have been testing Asterisk 1.4 for quite some time now. Being a member of the Interop iLabs VoIP Team, I have been able to play with very expensive testing hardware — and I put it to very good use.

While most of my work has yet to be published, I have made my findings available to those who are currently active in the Asterisk Development Team. I do intend to publish the findings that we made at Interop, along with my own independent testing.

A few weeks ago, I upgraded the PBX in my Bat Cave to Asterisk 1.4. Immediately after the upgrade the back light on my Linksys SPA-942 started blinking at very regular intervals.

This is driving me absolutely BONKERS!

I had noticed this situation before and a few customers had mentioned it, but until now I had not directly experienced this situation, so I wasn’t all that motivated to solve the problem — Now I am!

Upon further examination, I have been able to determine that the back light blinks every time SIP registration period expires (Register Expires value, in the web interface) and for me this only seems to happen on Asterisk 1.4 — Asterisk 1.2.12.1 does not experience this behavior. However, I have heard from someone in IRC that it happens on Asterisk 1.2.18 on their SPA-942.

This situation may be related to the way Asterisk handles the renewing of the SIP registration. I currently examining the differences in the handling of the SIP Registration process between Asterisk 1.2 and Asterisk 1.4. With a little luck someone will be able to determine the cause of this problem, hopefully quickly, for my sanity.

I would like to know if others have experienced this situation — Especially when using other software besides Asterisk 1.4 or older than Asterisk 1.2.18. If we can determine the specific version this behavior started, we can narrow down the cause.

I have not experienced this situation on when using OpenSER v1.1.1 and SER v0.99, so I am reasonably certain that Asterisk is at least part of the cause.

I have noticed the same issue with Asterisk 1.4. When I got the phone I think I was running 1.4.2 and I believe it happened then.

Yes - it seems that the linksys box keep sending register commands to asterisk.. I don’t know why .. if you’ve found a solution please contact me :)

I/we have not found a ’smoking’ cause nor the solution.

It seems very much related to the registration timeout value. Which could mean that the SIP registration is timing out versus getting renewed.

Did anyone ever figure this out? We resorted to setting the backlight timeout to 0, so the backlight is always lit. It’s less distracting than having it blink, but I wonder if it’s going to kill the backlight eventually.
