UPDATED: SunRocket Closes Without Notice….Asterisk To The Rescue!
Many are now reporting the abrupt closing of SunRocket yesterday at the close of business.
I am calling for SunRocket to do the right thing and inform those that are inquiring about the procedure to ‘unlock’ SunRocket VoIP Adapters. This way previous SunRocket customers can easily take their business elsewhere.
However, if SunRocket refuses there is still hope. After first publishing this article, Steve E. pointed out http://gizmopasswords.blogspot.com/, which discusses several options to re-configure your Sunrocket VoIP Device to either another VoIP Service (or your own Asterisk PBX)
When attempting to re-configure your SunRocket VoIP Device, you will need to change the SIP Proxy Hostname, along with the authentication username and password. Any VoIP Provider that allows you to ‘Bring Your Own Device’, you can take the information they provide you and plug it into the admin interface of your SunRocket VoIP Device.
As for the transferring (porting) of SunRocket telephone numbers many other providers are jockeying for your business. I am currently recommending Ex-SunRocket Customers to sign up with any of the following providers:
VoIP.com Provides an excellent set of packages, very comparable to SunRocket’s — including ‘unlimited’ plans. If you sign up for a whole year, you get a significant discount.
ViaTalk is offering to buy out your SunRocket contract and is offering free shipping on a new VoIP device if you use the code SHIPFREE when checking out.
NuFone very well may be suited for those SunRocket customers who do not need the ‘unlimited’ plan. Full Disclosure: I am the CTO of NuFone inc.
Bandwith.com would be a very good choice for the larger SunRocket accounts.
VoIP.com, Bandwidth.com, ViaTalk.com and NuFone have already established relationships with the same underlying carriers as SunRocket, so the migration path is almost trivial, once you have a functional VoIP Adapter again.

I came across this link in my searching:

Seems to give information on unlocking many sunrocket gizmos. Will be trying it when I get home. Does NuPhone support BYOD, in the event that we Sunrocket orphans are able to unlock our device?
I am a SunRocket customer and just heard today about the shutdown. However I called home and my phone service is still working. I called the SunRocket number and got the recorded message about not taking customer service or sales calles anymore. I am still able to log into my account on the Web.
I am looking around to see what other options I have are. ViaTalk and Vonage both have service in my area. Cox (Cable) VOIP is too expensive. I have been very satisfied with SunRocket. I had a few problems early on but it’s been good for the last year.
I’m a former sunrocket user. (just got transferred yesterday). Can you help me?
I was a Sun Rocket customer for more than a year. I really liked the service and am disappointed in the way they handled the shut down.
I lost both inbound and outbound calls. However, if you go into your account and click on call forwarding, you can transfer inbound calls to your cell phone, etc. It works.
You referenced a number of Voip services but did not mention Vonage. Any reason for leaving them off?
Steve E: Great find! This is a great resource for those looking to re-configure their device. Are you able to share screen shots from the device that you have? Just to give the less technically inclined something to work with…
Yes, NuFone supports the using of your own devices. We also have telephone numbers in 46 out of the 50 states. We are also planning on launching Canadian DIDs soon as well.
Steve: I can absolutely help you. I have sent you a private email to discuss.
Bill: With the recent Verizon lawsuit, I feel that Vonage could very well be the next VoIP Provider to either close up shop or at the least dramatically alter their business model to deal with the fact that there are somebody still has to pay per minute usage charges to the underlying carriers for access to the PSTN.
Those phat suits at the top of the ‘major players’ love the per minute residual income stream, so truly unlimited usage on the PSTN is still a ways off, unfortunately. My life would surely be a lot simpler if we didn’t have to count minutes, that’s for sure.
I have been with SunRocket for a year and just signed up for another year. My Amex card was charged $199 on July 4th so today they are out of business.
I have a gizmo and my husband is very good with messing with any electronic device.
Could you help us please.
Thank you.
Elizabeth: I would contact AMEX and submit a chargeback today, since you’ve only had such a short time to utilize the service. I am no lawyer, but if you can get your chargeback submitted before the Bankruptcy court takes over, AMEX should return your money — hopefully.
See if you can get into the Admin GUI of your Gizmo (by using the link from Steve E) Then you can re-configure the device to any VoIP Provider that allows the usage of your own VoIP device.
Thanks JJ.
Wish me luck with Amex.
Elizabeth: Remember stick with the facts - You intended to pay for a year, but they have terminated service without warning or refunding your recent charge.
Good Luck.
jj: private mail didn’t get through for whatever reason… interested in talking to you, so a workaround can be made public. The SR device I have is Linksys SPA2102-R, write me again, perhaps I mistyped my email or something before. I’m very technical, but am struggling to find the manual on the device… however, I know there’s a way in.
I am a Sunrocket customer. I have forwarded my SR number to my cell and that seems to be working. If I try this “re-configure/ Admin GUI of your Gizmo you” suggest will that stop my number from being forwarded?
I called comcast to see if I could add the phone to my already high comcast bill but they told me my number was lost forever. I want to find a new VoIP but I really want to keep my current number!! Any advice?
Thanks,
Kris: Since I have no internal info from SunRocket, I can only speculate. As long as you have set the forwarding in the SunRocket website and not via your VoIP Device then you should be OK.
I can put you in contact with the appropriate people at VoIP.com to port your number away. Check your email
Hey….I can still make and receive calls on my sunrocket phone, but no voicemail…how long do you think I have until it’s dead?
Also, it’s nice to know that the people who worked for SR are hella cool, and care about people. Thanks
Rachel: I have been hearing from various sources is that Packet8 is trying very very hard to buy whatever SunRocket customers are left. As It seems only those customers that are paying attention even know that there VoIP Provider has shut down.
If the negotiations break down, like all of the other attempts, then your service could be shutdown at any moment.
However, I would say you have at the very least until the end of the month.
AVOID TELEBLEND, the supposed preferred company to take over sunrocket business
Extreme warning! I signed up for Teleblend, I never got turned back on, they put a hold on my funds, but never gave me account information, nor did they provision me so I had service. I opened a help ticket (after being on hold an hour), they never called me back. I emailed them multiple times, they never got back to me.
When I emailed them again this morning to cancel my account, it got returned saying mailbox was full. I spent an hour twenty minutes on hold waiting for help on the phone, they never answered. I left a message and tried to call back, the support phone number is now saying its been disconnected.
I’ve requested to get my account cancelled and move on, but no response from them. If the hold isn’t released, I’ll be filing a fraud claim with my bank on Monday or Tuesday to try to recover the money they’re trying to take, and to be sure they don’t charge me anymore.
AVOID TELEBLEND!!
I just got an email today says Net2phone is honoring the Sunrocket contracts. I think that’s great news and hope it’s true. You just have to show proof of your contract. I’m going to give it a shot. Here’s the dets
Net2Phone VoiceLine
3 Free Months for everyone at signup
Additional Months with proof of SR Contract
$19.95 / month after the free period

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for posting that link. We ended up just signing up for a new account with our ISP and were able to gain access to our linksys. They gave us two months of free service.
We are still waiting for our number to port. Has anyone yet gotten so far?
