Asterisk Takes Hold in The Enterprise
Asterisk VoIP News has a great article detailing how Asterisk is taking over the enterprise.
From the article:
“Some of the most compelling data that we collected was simply around the wide variety of applications that Asterisk is now being used to address,” said Terry Atwood, vice president of sales, marketing and customer care at PIKA. “Of course, the early adopters are still there, but from a purpose and density standpoint there is now a much broader range of applications being built on Asterisk, ranging from individual companies seeking to provide their own telecoms services, to application development firms that are using Asterisk as a platform to develop systems for sale to the business and government markets throughout the world.”
This goes to show that once again my previous employer was so very wrong about how nobody would EVER rely on an Open Source PBX platform as their business telephone system.
I cannot tell you how many major enterprises, universities and competitive telephone carriers that I have assisted in some way over the past 5 years that are now utilizing Asterisk and OpenSER solutions for their production calling traffic.
Asterisk is very much a force to be reckoned with. From the very moment I discovered asterisk, I knew for an absolute fact that if given the proper nurturing, Asterisk could very well become a serious telephone system option for any level of deployment.
Most people cannot seeit, but all it takes to scale an OpenSER+Asterisk VoIP solution is a few common, logical thought processes based on your exact needs and requirements. However, actually determining what a business wants for their phone system always seems to be a major stumbling block for many.
I am very glad Asterisk has finally established a solid foundation from within the typical enterprise environments for production usage. Now I can focus more on delivering the system itself versus trying to first sell someone on some open source project before we can even discuss the details of their telephone system needs.
