Trixbox, Fonality Calls Home With Your Usage Statistics
I just noticed a thread over at Trixbox’s forum that discussed how trixbox phones home data about how you utilize your phone system.
Obviously a representative of trixbox, a Fonality owned entity, has responded with the typical “anonymous usage data.” This continues to define the trixbox leech mentality that I have documented before.
What is so difficult about setting up a proper opt-in process at the point of install? Many linux distributions have an anonymous package survey opt-in process, so obviously spending an hour coding one into the installation process has NOT been a priory for Trixbox/Fonality.

We have admitted we did not roll out this program properly and are making immediate moves to fix it.
I never saw your previous post about Astricon but we were invited to come “drop off a box and let people play with it”, so your allegations are simply incorrect and since the other two machines that had been there had not been able to boot for over 48 hours we sure didn’t feel like were were “pushing others out of the way”.
Its one thing to point out issues with people or companies but when the only purpose is to rant with inaccurate information you only do a disservice to those who read it.

Kerry: Mike, Olaf, many others and myself were in the same room when the person came in, unplugged and moved other gear out of the way and promptly walked out - They didn’t bother to even utter a single word to ANYONE.
The CodeZone was about collaboration and learning, if your people were at all interested in helping out, they would have stuck around to ask any questions that others may have had.
Fonality has not made a secret of the fact that they view trixbox as a lead generation tool for their commercial products. Guess this is one way they plan on gathering that info. We were somewhat excited about their decision to release a free version of the HUD client until we noticed that it runs an IRC server for no apparent reason we could discern. While they are coming clean maybe they can explain that as well…
Mike: I remember hearing that Fonality’s commercial solution also establishes an encrypted VPN from the client’s location back to a Fonality server for ‘remote management’ purposes - Perhaps this also needs to be explained and setup as an opt-in process versus keeping it hidden from the customer.
A quick google ‘fonality vpn’ confirms my memory.
