Using The Nokia E61i
Over the next couple weeks I intend to detail the configuration and usage of the Nokia E61i phone. I have been using the E61i for a few months now. I was also lucky enough to use E61 for quite a while, so will also document some of the differences and will tell you if Nokia listened to the various complaints many had about the E61 model before launching the E61i.
If all goes as planned, I intend to document not only the standard features of the Nokia E61i, but will also provide detailed information on how to configure VoIP over WIFI to work the best with both Asterisk and OpenSER. Unfortunately, one of the things that Nokia did not correct is the SIP firmware, so there are a few little tricks that I have learned that will make your life a bit easier when attempting to setup the VoIP Services of the E61i.
I will also provide specific details on how to conserve the most battery power when using the VoIP over WIFI.
As always, if anyone has any specific questions or specific features they want documented, please comment.

nice, i’ve had my e61i for almost a year now. i look forward to a good write up on voip over wlan. found you via an alert i have with google news / blogs.
While, I use the Nokia E61, I would love to know the tricks about getting it to use it as a SIP client. I have tried a couple of times with no success.
Meanwhile, Fring which I downloaded and configured in no time, works great as a SIP client in addition to a MSN, AIM and Google IM client!
I’m mostly very satisfied with the E61 (non-i), and would like to get a 61i at some point.
One nit I’ve noticed with the SIP client is that unlike cell service, it (or maybe NuFone, my excellent VoIP provider) requires that IP phone numbers begin with a 1 before the area code. This is kind of a problem since the thousands of numbers in my contact list do not begin with a 1.
Thanks in advance for any clues on prepending a 1 to a dialled number when using the SIP client.
David: A short term solution to the 1+ problem is NuFone could research the possibility of accepting ten digit numbers for US domestic calls.
I don’t immediately see any major problems with doing this as we require 011 or 00 for prefixed for international dialing.
I will bring this up at the our engineering staff meeting, later this week.
I just got a e61i and I am trying to get it to work with my trixbox/asterisk server at work. I can place calls, but I can’t receive them. I had a similar problem with a phone at home, it seemed like a stun/firewall configuration thing.
Thanks, James
With the E61i will I be able to configure it to function much like my softphone functions with my current home based VOIP service? In other words will the SIP client enable me to configure the E61i to make calls to other landlines, cell phones, etc. as if I were calling from my home VOIP number (assuming I have access to Wifi) and without using cell minutes? OR, since my VOIP service allows me to forward my calls to a valid SIP, will I be able to register my Nokia phone with a valid SIP address thus be able to receive my “forwarded VOIP” calls to my cell phone without using cell minutes (again, assuming my cell is within WiFi range)?
I’ll be receiving my E61i on Wed, 4/2/08, and I use Skype Pro with a Skype phone number. I’m in Victoria, B.C., and plan to use any cell plan I get mainly as a way for my family and friends, in the states as well as Canada, to send me a text or phone call, which I’ll normally return when I’m in a wifi spot or at home where I’m always wified. Is there a better service than skype for the $ 54.00 I’ve spent on skype? Pretty cheap compared to any full Canadian cell service. Thanks all.
